Easy read for a sometimes complex subject. Great for newcomers to the metadata world. Explains all the technical stuff at a down-to-earth, relatable level. Great examples!

Nice general overview of the subject with reference to continue reading. Some parts could have a little bit more detail and less repetition.

Very approachable overview of the topic.

Excellent Service. Great Biik.

This book is precisely what it needs to be: a concise but thoughtful introduction to the use of metadata as both a historical phenomenon and modern megaphenomenon. Metadata are supremely important in the world of big data, and Pomerantz does an effective job of selling the reader on their value. He is also careful to parse a wider definition of metadata than 'phone records,' showing where it can be used in less political applications like library of congress records or book jackets. This is also a kind oblique introduction to library and information science, insofar as Pomerantz assumes no knowledge of these topics and offers the reader the basics. For anyone new to metadata, library science or information science, this is a quick, informative read that will fill in a lot of holes. I don't think these are topics most people take the time to learn about, despite their very meaty role in modern life. -Ryan Mease

A very pleasant and informative read with just the right amount of detail about emerging metadata standards for the layperson. For a deeper look at some of the implications I recommend Ronald Day's Indexing It All

Wow. This book is hot. From start to finish, Uncivilized is filled with dirty talk and uninhibited sex.Anthropologist Dr. Moira Reed is sent on a mission to bring back Zacharias Easton home from the Amazon, and help him transition back into the modern world. She needs to do her best with this mission, because not only will Randall Cannon, Zach’s godfather and the man who funded the whole mission, give her a generous grant, she will also be able to publish her work with the man who lived in the Amazon with a tribe for eighteen years.Zacharias never wanted to leave his tribe. It’s been his home for eighteen years, and he’s happy there. But some American guy who claims to be his godfather wants him back, and he has no choice but to go with the gorgeous redhead. At first, he fought Moira’s efforts and made it difficult for her, but when Moira, who is three years older, offered to teach him everything in the modern world, he has something in mind he wants to learn. And he has something he wants to teach Moira. That no matter what she does, he is and always will be uncivilized.Believe it or not, Tarzan was my favorite Disney movie. I have a lot of fond memories of it as a kid, and I jumped at the chance to buy this book when it was on sale a while back.As hot as steamy as the sex was, I wanted more. I wanted to see what Zach’s eighteen years with the tribe was like. I wanted more from the characters. I never get to know much about them, other than their insatiable sex drives, and bits that don’t get sore from too much sex. Seriously. These two were getting it on day in and day out! I wanted more story. Uncivilized is basically a PWP (Plot? What Plot?) book.Zach has no intention of staying in the US, and he resented Moira for taking him away from the place he called home for eighteen years. He basically made it hard for Moira when they flew to the US, and he was barely civil to her until when they started sleeping together. The lust was obvious, but I didn’t see what they could be beyond their sleeping arrangements. His transitioning into the modern world felt too effortless. Eighteen years away from the US, and when he arrives, it’s as if he never left. I know Father Gaul, a missionary priest, visited Zach’s tribe and gave him reading materials and spoke to him in English, but I don’t know.I didn’t know what to think of Moira, too. She’s smart, yes. Kind. Has gorgeous red hair. But that’s pretty much it.Uncivilized, a quick and steamy tale told in alternating POVs, is filled with hot and incredibly-written sex. So that’s a plus, I guess. Haha. I’m definitely not complaining about that.I would have enjoyed it more if the characters were given more substantial growth, and the story more, well… story. Surprisingly, I still liked this book. It just goes to show how dirty my mind really is. LOL.If you’re looking for a steamy read with an alpha male, light BDSM, and lots of sex, you might enjoy Uncivilized.

So the synopsis intrigued me big time--then I saw the cover and I was "so going to buy that book!"I read/absorbed the entire book in one day, I just couldn't put it down and when I did, I couldn't stop thinking about it. From the very first page I was hooked. yeah I have read "Get down on your knees" a million times in other books--but NOT LIKE THIS!!!!!First off Zach is an uncivilized man ripped out of a world the one he only knew and loved and forced back into the world he actually belonged in. Personally he should have been naked(for real) on the cover because visualizing him strutting around Moira's house naked because that's what he was used too, was the "battery" moment for me(LOL) Moira the woman who brings him back to civilization is not prepared for HIM: hot, beautiful, dominant and sexual, okay I wasn't prepared for that either but sometimes you just have to deal with the hand you're dealt.(LOL) This was such a refreshing storyline from what I normally read, I loved the characters and the sex was fricking OFF THE CHART!!! A couple times I felt like chain smoking a carton and I quit 14 years ago. Thats enough of TMI, you need to read the book to properly understand what I'm talking about. I also have a rule, I normally purchase the ebook and if I love it ALOT I will buy the paperback. I was at 50% when I stopped long enough to purchase the paperback, I cannot wait to have this on my bookshelves.

3.5 stars — Well, I can honestly say this was not what I was expecting… I was expecting a more straight up erotica, but we really got a lot more depth in this story. And I think it made for a better story in the end. But at the same time I seem to still be plagued by distraction while reading, so I had a hard time staying absorbed. Not sure if it was the book, b/c I have lots of good things to say, or just the mood I’m in…I’ll likely give the book the benefit of the doubt and round up.I was actually really interested watching Zach adjust to “the modern world”, and deal with his expanding feelings for Moira…especially when it seems like romantic love was not a concept that his tribe subscribed to. His journey throughout the story kind of fascinated me. Now, I’m not sure how realistic it all was…sometimes I would wonder at how he knew some things but didn’t know others, but I decided not to overthink it and just enjoy the story for what it was without getting wrapped up in the details. There were times I wasn’t sure I would like his character. He…well, I don’t know. He’s exactly as the title suggests, but part of this “uncivilized nature” is that he’s been instilled with, almost, a different set of values. I was a bit uncomfortable with the sexual roles of men and women in his tribe. It’s kind of a difficult thing to read about as someone from a Western world. It made me think about consent, if nothing else. And he teetered on this line with Moira as well. Now, obviously, we know she did consent from being inside her head…but the way a few of their encounters played out were on the line. The thing I appreciate about actual BDSM (if it’s done right, as far as I understand it), is that there is clear, written consent, things are agreed upon beforehand, and there is a manner to stop things. That’s not what happened in this book. I don’t have bad feelings, it just made me think is all. And that kind of went off on a tangent, whoops.Anyways, my heart did hurt for Zach watching him struggle with his past and all the feelings that coming back to the US brought out in him. I enjoyed the fact that his story was more than just the sex and romance…we explored what his role in modern society would be, and how he would feel value. I found that interesting. I also really appreciated Zach’s changing relationship with Randall. It could have gone black and white, but Randall was truly an interesting character in his own right.I actually really liked Moira as well, even as she contributed to my heavy thinking about the consent issue. She seemed genuinely caring and empathetic towards Zach’s situation, and tried really hard not to push her own desires on to him, but to try to see his journey from his perspective. And she could be feisty and give as good as she got when pushed. As for their relationship…it was kind of a fun ride, b/c it started out heavily in lust, and we did actually get to see feelings develop on both sides. I felt those feelings, I believed them. I’m usually not one for sex without emotions, so I enjoyed their later encounters more than their initial ones. All in all this book made me think, I just might not have been quite in the right frame of mind to enjoy it to its fullest.

Sexy Little Numbers: How to Grow Your Business Using the Data You Already HaveBy Dimitri Maex, Paul B. Brown

Imagine if you could identify your business’s most profitable customers, craft a better marketing strategy to communicate with them, and inspire them to buy more? Well now you can. And the best part is that you can do it using the data you already have.Today, everything we do creates data, and the volumes are enormous.  Virtually every time someone views something online, enters search on Google, or even surfs the web on a smart phone, another chunk gets added – in real time - to the multibillion gigabyte (and growing) trove of data that can help us better understand and predict consumer behavior.  We no longer need expertise in math or statistics or even expensive modeling software to get the most out of all these revealing consumer insights.  A revolution in data analysis is underway, and the methods and tools for aggregating and analyzing this “data deluge” are suddenly far simpler, less expensive, and more precise than they were.  In this book – the first of its kind – Dimitri Maex, Managing Director of global advertising agency OgilvyOne New York and the engine behind the agency’s global analytics practice, reveals how to turn your data - those sexy little numbers that can mean more profit for your business – into actionable strategies that drive real growth and revenues.  And he can show you how to do it at virtually no cost. In his clear, easy-to-understand style, he explains how to:

  • Identify which customers are most valuable, which have the most potential to be valuable, which are most likely to buy more in the future, and which are not worth targeting.    • Allocate your marketing assets in the best possible way and pinpoint the outlays that will generate the highest possible returns.    • Figure out precisely which communication or media brought a customer to your company’s web site and what that customer will do once she arrives.    • Predict which products or services customers will want in the future.    • Learn which customers are preparing to defect to the competition and how to stop them.    • Determine which customers buy your product because it is perfect for their needs, which ones purchase because they liked your ad, which ones chose you because of an appealing price, and which ones came to you through word-of-mouth…or some combination of all these  factors.    • Drill your geographic targeting down to the regional, zip code, and even neighborhood level.    • Optimize your web presence to get the maximum return from search.

A must read for marketers striving to get the biggest ROI on their advertising dollars, small business owners eager to grow faster, researchers needing a consumer in mind for whom to create new products or services, those in finance responsible for growing the bottom line, and even creatives looking for feedback to help them improve their output, Sexy Little Numbers is THE essential tool not just for math nerds and number crunchers, but for anyone wishing to use the data at their fingertips to grow their business and increase their profits dramatically.http://sellorelse.ogilvy.com/sexy-little-numbers

Amazon.com Review Q&A with Dimitri Maex

Q. Online advertising online has become the dominant force in the world of advertising, as you explain in the book. Having been on the front lines of this seismic shift, what do you think is the most important data businesses should be looking at in order to get the most return on their online ads?

A. The most important data will tell you exactly what an individual customer wants and needs at a particular moment in time. The most valuable data about these customers will have three attributes. It will be very predictive of a customer’s needs and wants, it will be scarce and it will be recent. The last – recency – is increasingly important. Data ages very quickly in some categories. Knowing that a customer is looking to buy a red dress now is much more valuable than knowing she was looking for one a month ago.

Q. In the book you talk about the Gaus Theory, which says that if you know what people search for, and how that changes over time, this could potentially lead to a barometer of society’s mental state. How has this approach to gleaning consumer insights via search patterns matured over time, and why is it so important now?

A.The best indication of what someone is looking for is their search behavior; customers are actually telling you what they are looking for. Search data is can also give you an idea of what language customers are using, which can give you pointers as to how to talk about your products and services in all media.

Q. In Chapter Six, you mention that, at one time, your clients were very excited that “everything is measurable!” Yet you note that when everything is measurable, companies need to have a way to distinguish what you should measure and what you shouldn’t. How have your clients dealt with this challenge?

A.I still see a lot of companies drowning in numbers. This is because they have not spent enough time planning for measurement. In the book I describe a very simple process we use with clients to help them figure out what they should measure. It starts with a conversation around what the goals are, then we tend to craft measurement plans using those goals as a starting point.

Q. You also discuss how UPS sought to strengthen their brand and provide more services for small and medium businesses and how, by embracing the word ‘logistics,’ you were able to build a new campaign for UPS. What was the best way to measure the success of the campaign?

A. We tend to measure these types of campaigns in various stages. Before the campaign launches, it can be tested in research. Then when the campaign launches, the first results we usually see are how audiences engage on the digital assets of the campaign. But these digital metrics rarely give a complete picture of the campaign’s performance. Ultimately campaigns need to be judged based on the objectives they set out to achieve and they are rarely visits to a landing page or click through rates on a banner. They are usually to drive brand awareness or recognition, to change brand perception and ultimately to sell more products. For UPS we also looked at the impact the logistics campaign had on key brand attributes and we linked it back to sales. We thereby not only understood how customers engaged with the campaign, we also got a good read of whether the campaign drove the outcomes we set out to achieve.

Q. In your final chapter, you say that marketing, research, and advertising are all on their way to being automated. Is this really the future of the industry and if so, what is the most important thing companies need to do to adapt?

A.Not all of marketing, research and advertising will be automated. But a lot of the analytics and number crunching will be. Companies will then be able to differentiate themselves by adopting the insights from the analytics and acting upon them. This should be the main focus area for most companies going forward.

Q. These days, “data mining” and “big data” have gotten a bit of a bad rap, as privacy advocates have become increasingly vocal about what they see as the insidious effects of companies knowing too much about our habits, buying patterns, and personal data. Are the practices you advocate in this book an invasion of privacy? And given that these practices will only become more and more widespread, what steps can concerned consumers take to safeguard their personal information?

A.Today’s privacy debate is a bit of a lightning rod, rightly so. Consumers are very concerned about the data companies are collecting and how that impacts their privacy. However, 99.5% of all practices are not malicious. And where there has been abuse in the past, the industry has very quickly self-regulated. Government is also working on legislation and I strongly believe that in the very near future the appropriate legislation and guidance frameworks will be in place to make people more comfortable with the entire issue. Then the focus will shift from the negative to the positive – from the fear of companies gathering personal information to the opportunity for consumers to get better products and services from these companies based on them having access to my data.
