About the Author

David Wolber is a leader in App Inventor education and teaching beginners how to program their phones and tablets. His focus is empowering artists, designers, kids, women, men, humanity majors, business students—makers of all types—to add coding to their creative arsenals. His teaching materials, video screencasts, and course-in-a-box are available at appinventor.org, and his students have been chronicled in articles of the New York Times, San Francisco Chronicle, and Wired Magazine.

David is a professor at the University of San Francisco. He taught one of the first App Inventor courses in 2009 as part of a Google pilot and has been teaching and working with the App Inventor teaching community ever since. His teaching materials on the Google and MIT sites, and on appinventor.org, have provided the first introduction to coding for thousands of new app builders, and his course-in-a-box materials have served as a template for many App Inventor courses at the K-12 and university levels. David recently took a sabbatical at MIT to work with co-author Hal Abelson and contribute to the development of App Inventor 2. He also is contributing to the Mobile Computer Science Principles (mobile-csp.org) course for the new Advanced Placement (AP) course is US high schools.

Harold (Hal) Abelson, a professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at MIT, has a longstanding interest in using computation as a conceptual framework in teaching. He has played a key role in fostering MIT institutional educational technology initiativeI, and is a founding director of Creative Commons and Public Knowledge. Hal’s book, Turtle Geometry, written with Andrea diSessa in 1981, presented a computational approach to geometry that has been cited as "the first step in a revolutionary change in the entire teaching/learning process."

Ellen Spertus is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at Mills College, where she has taught with App Inventor, and a Senior Research Scientist at Google, where she was one of the App Inventor developers. She and her work have been written about in Wired, USA Today (which described her as "a geek with principles"), and in The New York Times (as one of three "women who might change the face of the computer industry"). In addition to her many technical publications, her writings have appeared in the book She's Such a Geek: Women Write about Science, Technology, and Other Nerdy Stuff and in the magazines Technology Review, Chronicle of Higher Education, Odyssey: Adventures in Science, and Glamour.

Liz Looney is a senior software engineer at Google, where she helped develop App Inventor and is a member of the Robotics Task Force. She has over 20 years of experience in creating programming tools and holds a bachelor's degree in Computer Science from The University of New Hampshire.

I read Teach Like A Champion and thought wow, inspiring and that there could not be another book that is as inspiring as this. Then I read Teach Like A Champion 2.0 and was literally blown away. The techniques are amazing. They can be used in a variety of classrooms and can be carried out by any kind of teacher (tenured and/or nontenured) The explanations are explicit and understandable. The DVD provides an accurate picture of what the technique looks like when successfully implemented in the classroom. The chapters are informative, inspiring and well written. The book focuses on the year throughout, not just the beginning or the end of the year! I would recommend this book to any of my colleagues! A great book to cetner a professional development around and a must have for your own personal professional collection!

Lemov's book can be truly transformational for teachers and schools. We use his first volume (TLAC 1.0) extensively in my public school as part of our professional development, and, although many of his techniques aren't earthshattering to veteran educators, his book codifies and names the technique in a way that makes it really easy for a school to develop shorthand around them. It also lays out the reasoning behind many of the things good teachers do already. I cannot imagine any school, coach, or professional developer who isn't using TLAC--it will make your job easier, I promise.This second volume is definitely worth a purchase, even if you already have the first TLAC. Lemov is a workaholic, as evidenced by his frequent blog updates, and he has an insatiable curiosity to figure out what works in education. This book reflects both qualities, as he incorporates extensive revision and feedback from teachers to his original techniques as well as adds new ones. Although in general, I believe the charter school movement misguided and extremely problematic for the state of public education in our country, there is no denying that much innovation has come from some of the good charter networks. TLAC is a great example of this!

I love the book- wonderful additions to what was already great in the first edition. However, the used copy I purchased did not include the videos. Bummer for me trying to be cheap last summer and save my hard earned teacher dollars. I would recommend this to everyone, whether an experienced or a new teacher. I have used it in mentoring new teachers with much success.

Easy to follow, but the authors know they're writing for teachers so you're not talked down to. The video shows many of the techniques in action, though I did find some of the teachers a little lacking in their sensitivities towards their students. It's a great tool to add to our arsenal for use in today's classrooms. It should be a regular text for new teachers as it might take some of the stars out of their eyes regarding teaching, and give them some real tactics to use with students that actually work. Teaching isn't what it used to be and the authors acknowledge that in their techniques.

I've taught for a lot of years, doing things the way I learned long ago. The old ways didn't work anymore. This book changed the culture in my classroom. The students are happier, I am happier, and grades are higher. Thanks.

Absolutely brilliant text. Easy to read and not overwhelming. Pick a technique or two to try in your classroom!

Within 2 months of buying this my book fell apart. The cover completely fell of and the book fell into pieces. I waited until school started to see if my school librarian could fix it. The glue wouldn't even work because the stitching on the binding was so poorly done. This was a lot of money spent on a book that is completely falling apart!

every teacher should read this more than once. been teaching for 30 years. best book ever! never too old to learn something new and of great value.
