But worthwhile, I think. I saw the movie years ago and I read the book now because I am about to watch the movie again. I remember the movie being beautifully filmed and I loved the score, but I left the theatre feeling confused. As I implied in the title, this is not an easy book to read: to puzzle out. At the end, nothing is as it appeared at the beginning. How anybody makes the book into a movie is beyond me.But if the book is difficult to read and understand, it is beautifully written. The language is lyrical. At the end of WWII, a young woman, a nurse, winds up living with three men in a bombed out wreck of an Italian Villa. One is The English Patient, hideously burned in a plane crash in Libya, and supposed to be dying. The other three are also victims of the war, although their wounds might be more difficult to see. The interactions of these four damaged survivors are woven into a tapestry as the novel unfolds, beautiful but, at the end, still difficult to comprehend.

The movie and book are two different animals and they are both masterpieces and can both stand on their own.The book is presented in three story-lines, independent and intersecting at the same time. That much character development would not have made a good movie.The story lines of Hana, Kip and Caravaggio are as unique and interesting as that of the English patient whose story brings them all together and intersect. While the Drama of each of their lives could be a story in itself and the specificity of the English patient, strangely, is not even needed to for they story arch...it could have been other things...but the saga of the English patient and the mystery of his life and identity interweaves and drives their more mundane life struggles. It's story, story, story and the English patient's narrative is a powerful driver.Missing or short-changed in the movie are the deeper story of Hana dealing with the trauma of her father's death, Kip's story of trying to navigate the fallout of colonialism, assimilation, identity and the east-west divide, and Caravaggio's (who's character, along with Hana first appear in a previous book " "In the Skin of a Lion"-they really did grow up together in Canada) who relationship with Hana is infused with tenderness but is confusing to Hana because of unresolved family relationships she is still sorting out...and sought out Hana in Italy (not the English patient-but there are connections there they turn up).Don't skip the book...it is a good read with characters of depth that you don't often encounter.

I was delightfully introduced to the world of The English Patient gradually, over an extended period, first in 1996 by being drawn into the story’s richness by Anthony Minghella’s beautiful film and screenplay in the theaters and then again in 2004 when I listened to the author's mellow voice, reading selections of his novel for the Collector’s Series DVD Bonus Material; the sound of his prose simply mesmerized me. I had read ‘The English Patient’ and other Ondaatje stories previously and I'd seen the film several times but Pico Iyer’s vivid Introduction in this Everyman’s Library Edition of 2011 boldly welcomed me back into the depth and the beauty of the author’s words.I have never read a book that has captivated me in the way that ‘The English Patient’ has. It focuses the reader on the story of five key people from different origins, four of whom the fates of war were sheltering at the end of the Second World War in a ravaged Italian villa with a personality of its own. The tales began early enough to clearly define the origins of these characters and the formation of their values and beliefs. While our period of experience covers no more than a few years, Ondaatje’s introduction to these people is simultaneously both continuous and instantaneous. I could fully feel the hearts and souls of each of these characters at every moment as they lived, felt, loved and evolved around each other. The depth and richness that he infused in each of these characters pulled them together while he shaped them to stand alone on their own merits. While mystery and love surrounded the English patient’s origins, I completely understood his complexities along with those of Hana, Kip and Caravaggio. While Katharine created the source for Almásy’s ferocious passion, Ondaatje’s beautiful style let me feel every moment and emotion of their love, making it both a wonderful and a most enriching experience.Nature, humanity, war and sensation were also characters that we learned to understand through the precise palate of Ondaatje's prose; you burn with their passion, you smell the villa breathing, the desert vastness overwhelms you, the undetonated bomb is alive, it's Africa, it's antiquity, it's timeless Europe, it's the 1940s, you are living in war, you are there.Bob Magnant is the author of The Last Transition..., a fact-based novel about Iran. This is just about my favorite book ever. The writing is alchemy. Every would-be writer should read it before even thinking about writing themselves. There are not many books that make you want to start again the moment you read the last words on the page, but I think I have done that twice in my life with this novel. I read this book once a year. It's simply perfect.

A truly amazing book. I don't know what to say about it. The narrative voice is omniscient and excellent, though somewhat mannered. The writing style is stunning. Set in a bombed Italian villa, it's about a nurse, a burn patient, a sapper (bomb disarmer), and a thief/spy. It begins near the end of the European part of WWII, but reaching back in time, and going on just passed the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It's an intertwined spy story and multiple-thread love story. But more than that, it's a story of personal life versus war. Characterization is deeply intelligent. It did have flaws. The time line was confusing. The sensuality was over-written. The change of pronouns' antecedent was often confusing, although there was usually a page break to signal a change was a possibility.

I have long wondered how is it that we can increasingly jump into the personal car of a complete stranger and yet seem to increasingly distrust established organizations and today's leaders?How is it that as our access to information dramatically increases, our views appear to become more narrow? In reading General Martin Dempsey's and Ori Brafman's chapter on the digital echo, I felt I finally had the language and a tool kit to be able to think about how and why we seem to be experiencing a time of such radical polarization -- a time when it appears we have lost our ability to converse calmly, debate rationally, listen empathetically and hear divergent points of view.For example, while talking about the "fog of war," Dempsey and Brafman present us with a powerful question: "What if the fog not only denied you access to the facts, but actually convinced you of the validity of erroneous data?" as someone who served as a CEO for 25 years, I wish I had this book to ready at the outset of my career. It is an easy read with a valuable framework, lots of insights and good stories. Read it over a weekend. After reading the book I was fortunate to interview General Dempsey in front of nearly 100 CEOs, and he is thoughtful, articulate and not at alll what i would have expected in four star general before I read the book. it was an inspiring evening. Not a feel good book or a work of political correctness at all. And its message and observations are extremely timely in this time of social media and polarization of views around opposing narratives instead of fact. It is of broad application for anyone with any leadership responsibility, whether at work, at home with the family, or in the community. Pretty amazing that the former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (retired in Sept 2015) has had a decades long relationship with a tofu eating, Israeli born, adjunct prof at Cal Berkeley who specialized in peace studies but you'll need to read the book to find out why.

Overall, this is a great book on an effective leadership principle. The authors, General Dempsey and Mr. Brafman, separate the book into four main parts. The first two parts provide a description of today’s operational environment and the effectiveness of being inclusive. Part three is the main section which focuses on the leadership aspects of inclusiveness. Part four ties everything together.Of note is that the authors refer to another book by Mr. Brafman titled, The Spider and the Starfish. The leadership principles described here have a foundation in Mr. Brafman’s previous book and are supported by examples from General Dempsey’s career. For example, he describes a meeting with a Captain at a forward operating base in Afghanistan. The captain argues that the US military needs to adapt its fighting objectives to more effectively combat decentralized organizations like the Taliban. Decentralized organizations are resilient because they are inherently inclusive. The Captain then makes reference to the author’s successful use of inclusiveness in a previous legal fight with McDonalds over veganism.Bottom line: The authors did an excellent job of describing the effectiveness of being inclusive. It is a leadership principle that every manager should practice. The book is a quick read at only 176 pages and anyone who is a leader, will get something from it.

I started reading this book on a Friday afternoon, and finished it a few hours later. I didn't want to put the book down, and all of the passages in it about leadership, emotions, neuroscience, and collective decision making were so relevant and meaningful.

General Dempsey and Professor Brafman peal back the onion of leadership in the 21st Century. The book is an extremely interesting read, as well as being instructive and insightful about leadership challenges in the 21st Century. This first edition of this book, in 2000, was a broad study, drawing on a wide range of published research and historical evidence, of the enormous stock market boom that started around 1982 and picked up incredible speed after 1995. The book argued that the boom represented a speculative bubble, not grounded in sensible economic fundamentals. The second edition, in 2005, added an analysis of the real estate bubble as similar to the stock market bubble that preceded it, and warned that "Significant further rises in these markets could lead, eventually, to even more significant declines." Alas, both predictions turned out to be true, as we now all know.Will history repeat itself with this third volume? That is hard to say. In this latest edition, Professor Shiller updates his argument, and augments the text to reflect developments since the 2005 second edition. Of particular interest, he adds an important new chapter on the bond market, which many feel is also in bubble territory. The good news is that, while Professor Shiller says that returns in all asset classes are likely to be subpar for some years given today's elevated asset prices, the mood is less somber than in previous editions, and there are no warnings of imminent doom, as in previous editions. In particular, he does not see a classic "bubble" in bonds, due to the lack of "exuberance" -- prices for bonds are being bid up reluctantly by investors, he says, which is not the formula for a bubble. However, he certainly balances that somewhat comforting news with a realistic view of the risks that the current situation presents to investors and savers of all types, stocks, bonds, housing, and savings accounts. His main piece of advice to all Americans concerned about their financial future may be the most sensible piece of financial advice ever written: spend less, save more! Yes, we all know that, but when the winner of the 2013 Nobel prize says that, it really means something.I find Professor Shiller's writing style highly enjoyable, not at all like most economics books. The plain-spoken style is smart, wry, and often witty, and there are almost no mathematical formulas, except in the occasional technical notes in back. The book also talks about a lot of factors that are intrinsically interesting to non-economists. For example, it has chapters devoted cultural factors in investing; the effects of the news media; "new era" economic thinking; psychological factors; psychological anchors for the market and herd behavior.Professor Shiller ends by offering a lot of good, commonsense advice to both policymakers and investors, large and small. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand what's behind the current anxiety, turmoil, and hopes, for a brighter financial future for all Americans.

This reviewer remembers having read the first edition of this book back when it first came out in either 1999 or 2000, just before the stock market crash of 2000-2001. It did a very good job at providing historical perspective regarding long-term values in the stock market. It, correctly, pointed out that the stock market was overpriced and that a decline would be reasonable to expect. And so it happened.Since then, bubbles have also burst in the housing market worldwide as well as the stock markets. In addition, commodity markets have taken on many of the speculative characteristics of equity and housing markets, characteristics that they have not had, at least to the extent of the equity and housing markets, in the past. Bubbles in these markets were not discussed in the first edition of the book. For this reason this reviewer purchased this edition of Dr. Schiller's book - to obtain historical perspective on the housing markets, equity markets since 2000 and commodity prices. The book, in short, provides very good historical perspective on the first two of these (housing and equity markets) but, unfortunately, not too much regarding commodity markets. It discusses long term trends and cyclical bubbles in their historical context. For this reason alone this book should be read by serious investors and students of both economics and finance. As Aristotle once said "A man with no perspective has no value".In addition to providing historical context in regard to these markets, the book also does an excellent job at explaining, through the lens of economic psychology, why bubbles occur. The primary reason is that there is human interaction, that taken on the aggregate, influences the market as a whole. Factors influencing this psychology, that are discussed in some depth in the book (about a chapter each), include (not all inclusively) the optimism (usually unfounded) induced by new technologies (what Dr. Schiller refers to as "New Era Economic Thinking"), the role of the news media and the de-regionalization and globalization of these markets (housing markets historically were only regional within nations and equity markets, in general, were not global - this has changed since the mid-1990s though). Dr. Schiller does a very good job at showing how these primarily psychological factors have played a very important role in inflating and deflating bubbles. He does an excellent job at showing how these psychological factors have played a more important role that economic "fundamentals", as posited by the "rational expectations" school of macroeconomics and finance, are not able to explain credibly. Not that there are no other books available on the subject. John Auther's, writer for the Financial Times, does an excellent job at analyzing the role of psychological factors in bubbles albeit only those in equity markets (and with the emphasis being on institutional players in these markets) in his "The Fearful Rise of Markets: Global Bubbles, Synchronized Meltdowns, and How To Prevent Them in the Future". Dr. Schiller though drills down into more psychological (numerically) as well as analyzing these in detail. He also provides quite a few analogies that clarify his ideas (i.e., providing context in terms of research that shows how investor psychology very much mimics the spread of diseases).All and all the book does an excellent job at examining these psychological factors. Where the book somewhat falls short, however, is in the solutions provided (the final chapter of the book). Many of the solutions provided by Dr. Schiller do not seem very capable of reducing the growth of bubbles. For example, he cites the use, by monetary authorities, of "gently" higher interest rates. He also mentions that persons in "responsible" positions point out the existence of bubbles to the public. Both of these, at least to this reviewer, seem particularly weak. Dr. Schiller also, more importantly, posits that hedging and shorting can also play a very important role but, simultaneously, he also points out the weaknesses in these (i.e., the market financial instruments may not exist, shorting itself may raise prices as to do this some investors [i.e., those offering the shorts for sale] must hold the relevant securities and this can have the effect of raising their prices, etc.). These factors greatly reduce the ability of short selling and hedging's ability to mitigate the size of bubbles.Despite the problems cited in the last paragraph above, the book's historical perspective on equity and housing markets and its serious examination of psychological factors relevant to bubbles make it a very important book to read - especially for serious investors and students of economics and finance.

Robyn Ryle is an associate professor of sociology at Hanover College in Hanover, Indiana, where she has been teaching sociology of gender and other courses for 7 years. She went to Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi, for her undergraduate degrees in sociology and English with a concentration in women’s studies. She received her PhD in sociology from Indiana University–Bloomington and is originally from northern Kentucky. She is a member of the American Sociological Association and has served on the editorial board of the journal Teaching Sociology. She enjoys digging in her garden, cooking what comes out of her garden, and generally enjoying small town life. She currently lives in a 170-year-old house in scenic Madison, Indiana, with her husband, Jeff, stepdaughter Grace, and two rather peculiar cats.
