I first came into contact with this work because it was a required text for my seminary class on ethics. Pieper was a first rate German philosopher and expert on the works of St. Thomas Aquinas.If you study this book, Faith, Hope, Love (the three theological virtues), along with his other book, The Four Cardinal Virtues (fortitude, temperance, justice, prudence), you will have a wonderful primer on ethics from a classical perspective. I especially enjoyed his section on love. It is one of the best treatments of the subject I have read.One word of warning is in order. Philosophy is not light reading. I know, it was one of my majors. Philosophy written in German and translated into English produces a book that is not for the timid. If you are willing to take on the challenge, more power to you. It is worth the effort, but you should know what you are getting into before you put down your money. This is a book for those who want to think and wrestle with ethics. It is not for everyone.

You cannot go the theologians for an understanding of faith, hope, and love. You must go to the Christian philosopher. All I can tell you is that unless you plumb the depths of these three words, you will never fully grasp the meaning of I Corinthians 13. The book is rich in material and is an invaluable aid for anyone teaching Bible class. This work of Josef Pieper, to use another man's words, is good beyond hope! Not only that, his writing is within reach of most adult readers - unlike some of the other German writers who write only for their peers. This is every person's book! Use it with his other books, The Four Cardinal Virtues and The Truth of All Things. You'll never lend this book. Never.

About the Author

Stephanie Arnold received her B.A. degree in English from Stanford University and then continued her studies at the University of Wisconsin where she received an M.F.A. degree in directing and a Ph.D. in dramatic literature and theory. Before joining the Lewis & Clark College faculty in 1986, she taught at Mills College and the University of California, Riverside. This was actually a really decent textbook. Everything was laid out clearly and the text was easy to follow. There was a cohesive flow of information from the beginning of the book to the end and the index made searching for specific text quite easy. The plays that they use are also interesting and fun to learn about. My instructor did a great job picking out this book for our theatre course.

Had to purchase this for a class at local Uni. Ok, a little dry reading in most places, a few good stories/plays though.
