From Booklist

Densely packed with botanical descriptions, this book is an excellent look at the characteristics of the many tropical and subtropical species that avail themselves to horticultural propagation and enjoyment. It is among the first books to group species by the latest phylogenetic categories based on cytogenetic study of the included groups and species. Users may approach information about a species through the common name or botanical indexes. A typical entry includes the number of genera and species in a higher phylogenetic group. Common names, general shape, flower characteristics, and other information—including distribution, habitat, and hardiness zones—are succinctly summarized. Example species of the group are also botanically described. Each page has several high-quality documentary photographs of representative species from the groups on that or an adjoining page. An extensive glossary defines the descriptive terms used in the entries. The “References” section is a bibliography of the classification works used in preparing this volume. The audience for this reference work falls somewhere between the plant enthusiast and the botanist. It is reasonably priced and will fit well into any library’s general botanical collection, especially those lacking information about tropical plants. --Linda Scarth

This book is an excellent look at the characteristics of the many tropical and subtropical species that avail themselves to horticultural propagation and enjoyment. It is among the first books to group species by the latest phylogenetic categories based on cytogenetic study of the included groups and species.... The audience for this reference work falls somewhere between the plant enthusiast and the botanist. It is reasonably priced and will fit well into any library's general botanical collection. (Linda Scarth Booklist 2011-12-15)Best Reference Books 2011 (Neil Pond Library Journal 2012-01-01)One expects great photography in a Firefly title, but more than 3000 color photos in one book--yowza! Fayaz presents in this decade-long labor of love the fruit of his lifelong interest in tropical flora... This is likely to become the standard guide for tropical plants. Essential for botany and horticulture students, growers, and researchers. (Teresa R. Faust, Vermont Dept. of Libraries Library Journal Starred Reviews 2011-11-15)A huge instant classic. It arranges the species in family order (called phylogenetic), rather than by the usual alphabetical genus name. This is unique in a book so large and makes identification and comparison of similar plants much easier. (Clear Englebert West Hawaii Today 2011-12-20)This encyclopedia will become the standard reference book on tropical plants. The research for this volume was a mammoth task, using the latest nomenclature and plant systematics to develop a comprehensive and useful text. The plants are arranged according to evolutionary order, rather than alphabetically by generic name, so that the identification and comparison of similar plants is easier. Thousands of color photographs help to illustrate the major features of the plants described. (Adele Kleine Chicago Botanic Garden 2012-03-01)The pictures in this most recent guide to tropical plants are jaw dropping. Just as anyone can be overwhelmed with the beauty of a tropical forest or garden, the reader is overwhelmed with the gorgeous pictures in this book.... What makes this book especially useful and timely is the arrangement of the plants...by the 2009 Angiosperm Phylogeny Group III.... The description of each plant is what a serious plant scientist expects, yet it is also useful for the layperson... The glossary and indexes for both common and scientific names are extensive and thorough. This work is highly recommended for public and academic libraries. (Georgia Briscoe American Reference Books Annual 2012 2012-04-01)Fayaz is a collector and grower of tropical plants whose work has taken him from the Maldives mangroves to the orchids of Sri Lanka. Ten years of exploration have resulted in the most comprehensive volume on tropical plants to date, describing more than 3000 species from all of the major groups from mosses, ferns, and nonflowering gymnosperms to spectacular flowering angiosperms that make up 80 percent of all extant plant species on Earth. More than 3000 color photographs aid identification. Simply spectacular. (Brian E. Coutts and Cheryl LaGuardia Best Reference 2011, Library Journal 2012-02-28)

I just received my copy of Fayaz's Encyclopedia of Tropical Plants and I am already delighted. There are thousands of wonderful photos of a breath-taking diversity of plants, many of which are unusual and rarely photographed. It is wonderful to see the photos of parasitic plants, water plants, succulents and so on (and of course, orchids, bromeliads and palms and other typical tropical plants). The book is organized along modern taxonomic lines; for example, chapters on Basal Angiosperms, Basal Monocots, Commelinoid Monocots, Basal Eudicots and so on, so it is easy to compare and contrast plants that are considered to be closely related under current systematic theory. I would guess that anyone interested in plants would love the photos even if they never read any of the abundant text; professional botanists will find the details int the text extremely valuable. I give this book my highest recommendation. By the way, I am a professor of botany at the University of Texas, and have seen many books on plants. This one is spectacular.

This book exceeds my expectations! The book is built on the systematics of APG II. So the families are not orders alphabetically but according to the evolutionary tree of plants. This grouping allows to discover the common traits that eg different families of an order share. Many generas are included, even some of the most important species. The described plants are backed up with pictures. Those are a little small, but due to the high information density of this book, is is acceptable. The book is very heavy (I estimate 3-4 kgs) so it makes my back bag pretty heavy on my travel a lot. But, this is it worth! I hope the day comes, where such books are available as PDF. :)You can use these book either as a reference work, but it is also useful for identifying plants. For this use a certain knowledge of the plant systematics is required.Fazit: It is really a great work!

I love this book. I do question if it's gonna fall apart or not because of the binding but it's a treasure trove of knowledge.

I'm very impressed by the scope and dimension of this great anthology of all knowledge about tropical plants. There are photographs in at least 2 places in this book where labels mismatch the plants in description, however. The picture of Rondeletia odorata on p.581 is actually Clerodendrum calamitosum, and the picture of Cestrum aurantiacum on p.662 is actually taken from Brugmensia sanguinea on the previous page. If you are also a tropical plant lover but hesitate to buy because of the pricey tag of this book, I'd recommend you to wait until the next edition is printed.

This book was much more than I expected. Full of wonderful pictures, many more and of greater quality than I thought. While it is technical in its descriptions, there is a glossary if you need it and details on culture are included. I am very glad I finally purchased it!

The book is filled with great photo's and scientifically desciptive. However it does seem to have little information on practical considerations for using or working with the plant material, such as propagation, sun/shade requirements, invasive or not or landscape uses. Jack

I am a professional garden designer and plantswoman and I expect great detailed info for plants... however... this book was tooooo deep into the botany end and not enough hort info...

Excellent reference. Would be even better if it talked more about each plant's needs. Great for identification. Glad I bought it.
